THE BASICS

WHAT IS A UTM CODE?

A UTM code is a short snippet added to the end of a link that tells your analytics where a visitor came from. “UTM” stands for Urchin Tracking Module — a naming convention every major analytics tool understands, Featherweight included.

When someone clicks a tagged link, the parameters travel with them to your site, so your dashboard can group visits by source, medium, and campaign. That means you can finally answer “did the newsletter or the tweet drive more signups?” with real numbers instead of guesswork.

utm_source
Source. The referrer — newsletter, google, twitter, or a partner site.
utm_medium
Medium. The channel — email, cpc, social, referral, or banner.
utm_campaign
Campaign. The specific promotion — spring_sale, product_launch.
utm_term OPTIONAL
Term. The paid keywords you’re bidding on.
utm_content OPTIONAL
Content. Distinguishes two links in the same ad or email — great for A/B tests.
CORNER ADVICE

UTM BEST PRACTICES

Stay lowercase

UTMs are case-sensitive. “Email” and “email” count as two sources, splitting your data. Pick lowercase and stick to it.

Be consistent

Agree on a fixed vocabulary — always “social”, never “soc” one week and “social-media” the next. Consistency is what makes reports readable.

Use underscores or hyphens

Avoid spaces. Use underscores or hyphens between words so links stay clean and don’t get mangled into %20.

Only tag external links

Never add UTMs to links between pages on your own site — it resets attribution and confuses your session data.
